Kostas Kazakos
I am a (n+1) year PhD student in Computing Science & Information Systems at the University of Melbourne. I am advised by Prof. Steve Howard and Assoc. Prof. Frank Vetere. I am a member of the Interaction Design Lab. I design interactive technologies that address issues of everyday social concern with a focus on user experience. I work in the intersection of social sciences and engineering (Human Computer Interaction). My current research focuses on understanding the role of technology-mediated separation on the experience of periodic family reunion. This is my portfolio.
Prior to coming to Melbourne, I obtained a Diploma and Masters of Engineering in Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. I also keep a blog where I write ideas, hacks and book reviews.

Projects
- Understanding the role of technology on the experience of periodic family reunion
This is my ongoing PhD project. In trying to understand the role of technology on the experience of periodic family reunion, I intend to extend the current understanding on the importance of designing technologies that truly meet the needs of the contemporary transitional family lifestyle.
- Designing mobile technologies for pneumonia diagnosis
This is a project with the Nossal Institute of Global Health at the University of Melbourne. The aim of this project is to design technologies that can provide an efficient and effective platform for pneumonia diagnosis in rural Africa.
- Biometrics and HCI
In this project with the Biometrics team of West Virginia University, the aim is to understand the role of biometrics within HCI. There has been a great deal of research in the area of usable security. However, since HCI is progressing towards new and uncovered territory it is important to investigate the experience of users with novel biometric technologies.
- Visualizing Trajectories in Twitter
This is a project with the Department of Geographic Information Science of RMIT university. The aim is to create a tool that can visualize trajectories of information that are being exchanged by users in the event of a bushfire or other catastrophic natural events.
